[9:18]  1 sn The concluding disjunctive clause is parenthetical. It anticipates the following story, which explains that the Canaanites, Ham’s descendants through Canaan, were cursed because they shared the same moral abandonment that their ancestor displayed. See A. van Selms, “The Canaanites in the Book of Genesis,” OTS 12 (1958): 182-213.

[17:8]  2 tn The verbal root is גּוּר (gur, “to sojourn, to reside temporarily,” i.e., as a resident alien). It is the land in which Abram resides, but does not yet possess as his very own.

[17:8]  3 tn Or “as an eternal.”

[23:2]  4 tn Heb “Sarah.” The proper name has been replaced in the translation by the pronoun (“she”) for stylistic reasons.

[23:2]  5 sn Mourn…weep. The description here is of standard mourning rites (see K. A. Kitchen, NBD3 149-50). They would have been carried out in the presence of the corpse, probably in Sarah’s tent. So Abraham came in to mourn; then he rose up to go and bury his dead (v. 3).

[28:1]  6 tn Heb “you must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.”

[33:18]  7 tn Heb “in front of.”

[35:6]  8 map For location see Map4 G4; Map5 C1; Map6 E3; Map7 D1; Map8 G3.

[35:6]  9 tn Heb “and Jacob came to Luz which is in the land of Canaan – it is Bethel – he and all the people who were with him.”

[36:2]  10 tn Heb “from the daughters of Canaan.”

[36:2]  11 tn Heb “daughter,” but see Gen 36:24-25.

[42:13]  12 tn Heb “twelve [were] your servants, brothers [are] we.”

[42:13]  13 tn Heb “today.”

[42:13]  14 tn Heb “and the one is not.”

[42:32]  15 tn Heb “twelve [were] we, brothers, sons of our father [are] we.”

[42:32]  16 tn Heb “the one is not.”

[42:32]  17 tn Heb “today.”

[45:17]  18 tn Heb “and go! Enter!”

[46:6]  19 tn Heb “and they took their livestock and their possessions which they had acquired in the land of Canaan and they went to Egypt, Jacob and all his offspring with him.” The order of the clauses has been rearranged in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[47:1]  20 tn Heb “Look they [are] in the land of Goshen.” Joseph draws attention to the fact of their presence in Goshen.

[47:13]  21 tn The verb לַהַה (lahah, = לָאָה, laah) means “to faint, to languish”; it figuratively describes the land as wasting away, drooping, being worn out.

[48:3]  22 tn Heb “El Shaddai.” See the extended note on the phrase “sovereign God” in Gen 17:1.
